Khiem Bui
I’m Khiem, the founder, chairman, and editor-in-chief of The Hearth Student’s Journal. I’m a freshman this year, and am interested in biology, math, and political science. I’ve always enjoyed academic writing, but never really found any reason to do it unless teachers assigned me work. Even then, for students who enjoy writing, class assignments rarely fulfil their need to write, often restricting students to only certain sources or topics. Undergrad journals rarely accept high school submissions and seldom publish them. I thought I was alone in this, but over time I met more and more people who shared my sentiments, mostly JHUCTY. I find that passion is something that can be multiplied in large groups. At CTY, each and every student was incredibly talented and motivated, but it was the community that truly inspired these students to reach new heights. I founded THSJ to create a community like this and give incredible students like yourselves a chance to be heard.
Previously, I’ve written and submitted a paper on the South China Sea disputes to The Concord Review which Mr. Le Hong Hiep, Senior Fellow at the ISEAS-Yusof Ishak Institute, described as “second-year undergraduate level”. I’m currently working on a paper analysing state responses to pandemics. Outside of research, I’m involved in student government, MUN, and my school’s newspaper. I’m taking AP Calculus BC and AP Biology this year and have completed IGCSE Additional Maths, Biology, and Chemistry, scoring an A for all of them.
I hope you’ll all help me turn THSJ into a vibrant community!

Hello, my name is Harry, and I’m a high school freshman passionate about applied mathematics, computer science, and physics. My academic journey is guided by a desire to solve real-world problems through innovative approaches.
I joined THSJ because of its focus on academic rigor and its supportive environment, which fosters intellectual growth and personal development. I’m excited to collaborate with like-minded peers and take advantage of opportunities to deepen my knowledge and explore my interests.
Academically, I’ve advanced beyond my grade level in mathematics and physics, contributing to projects that blend theory with practical application. My love for teaching led me to create the CS Inspiration Club, an initiative to introduce underprivileged students to coding and mathematics. This effort has reached multiple schools, with plans for international expansion.
Outside academics, I manage creative ventures, such as an investment platform for young creators, and pursue personal fitness records such as national qualifications for weightlifting. I strive to make a meaningful impact in STEM and beyond through dedication and collaboration.

Hi my name is Lucas Chan and I am a freshman at TAS. I was born in Hong Kong and raise in Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam. The reason for me joining THSJ is simply because I had nothing to do and was bored, at first I didn’t really want to do anything with THSJ but when I learned more about what THSJ through Khiem the THSJ founder, I was intrigued and decided to co-lead the club at TAS with some of my other friends. Currently I don’t possess any key academic achievements. I also do not have any crucial extracurricular achievements at the moment but I do participate in MUN for fun. I don’t necessarily do anything extracurricular for my resume or because it makes my record look better but instead to enhance my social skills.

Julia Pham
I am Julia, one of the BIS HCMC branch leaders of THSJ and a member of the communications and marketing team at THSJ. I am currently studying at the British International School HCMC.
At a young age, I discovered a deep passion for music and sports, which has truly inspired me to explore these topics through writing essays. Being part of the school media team has further fueled my love for writing and connecting with the big community in Vietnam. I strongly believe that writing has the power to connect people who share similar interests, and I aspire for my essays to reach and resonate with a wider audience. This led me to THSJ, an organisation that provides students a space to write about their passions and share their ideas with other peers. Through THSJ, I hope to contribute to a community where unique ideas and writings can be celebrated. My passion for the Arts and Sports has driven me to pursue opportunities that showcase my passion and dedication. Outside of school, I have attended a variety of piano competitions such as the South East Asia Piano competition where I was honoured to receive a silver medal and the World Piano Teacher association where I received a bronze award.

Hey THSJ! I'm Andrew Nguyen from BISHCMC, and I'm excited to be a member of THSJ. My main strengths lie in my understanding of computer science and engineering; as a member of BIS's VEX team and a long-time programmer, I can specialise in the STEM fields in this journal, especially when it comes to CS and engineering-related research papers. I can also be very versatile, having interests in many different fields. As someone participating in the World Scholar's Cup, I've also had the opportunity to learn many different things, ranging from history to music. Moreover, I've always had a special interest in business and economics, as well as the general sciences. I hope to make a great contribution to THSJ and to have the opportunity to help publish amazing papers from young, aspiring writers!

Since middle school, I excelled in every single school subject and participated in numerous activities. I got straight 4.00 throughout my entire middle school journey and only a 3.97 GPA in eighth grade. I joined almost every club and sport in my school, was a part of the student council, and took a more advanced math class than my classmates. I thought I was doing great until high school came, when I had to think about doing something bigger like getting an internship, crazy extracurriculars or writing a good quality research paper that can be published. That's when I saw THSJ as a perfect opportunity for me to not only develop both my soft and hard skills, but also build a strong resume for college.

My name is Thien Anh, a 9th grader from Delta Global School, and I am extremely esteemed to be a part of THSJ. With the current constantly changing world, it is essential for high school students to posses knowledge and understanding of the modern society. Being a kid that has experiences with such great conversations and topics, I share the views of many high school students with ambitions of sharing their knowledge yet lack a platform to do so. From such need, it is essential that young learners have a platform to share their understanding to their peers, especially in forms of expression such as writing. The Hearth Student Journal, in my opinion, provides an excellent oppoturnity for students to express their thoughts and knowledge to their peers while uphelding to academic standards, as well as providing students - including myself - a chance to run their own academic journals and provide quality contents to other readers.
Once again, I wish everyone to have the best experience coming to THSJ, and wish you all the best en route to your publication!

I was also part of the school's Model United Nations program since middle school, where I deepened my interest in international affairs and geopolitics. As for my extracurricular achievements I am very grateful to have made it to the top 5% of an essay competition I took part in last year, where I look forward to further ameliorating my writing by participating in essay competitions and exploring research projects I hope to embark on this year. I am very grateful to be a part of this initiative!

Christopher Huang
My name is Christopher Huang, and I am a freshman at Heritage High School. Ever since I joined my school's speech and debate team in a public forum debate, I've developed a strong passion for research and academic discourse. The experience of crafting arguments and engaging in intellectual discussions sparked my interest in pursuing more rigorous academic writing, particularly research papers. This drive led me to THSJ, where I saw an opportunity to expand my academic horizons beyond competitive debate. Currently, I'm working diligently to establish a new THSJ chapter at my school, which will launch in the 2025/2026 school year. While my journey in academic research is just beginning, I've maintained strong academic performance across my courses and have earned recognition in several public forum debate tournaments. Outside of academics, I actively participate in my school community and volunteer at the Schoolhouse. Through THSJ, I aim to not only develop my research skills but also create opportunities for other students to explore their scholarly interests and contribute to academic discourse.

Tina Xu
Hi, my name is Tina, a Grade 10 student in CDNIS, about to start IBDP next year. I am passionate about math and science, particularly biochemistry and neuroscience, and I am currently preparing for competitions like BrainBee and USABO. I also find joy in writing fiction, working with words, along with coding (somehow, still learning as a beginner). I see THSJ as a wonderful opportunity to enhance my academic writing, leadership and cooperation skills while pursuing my interests. Besides, I admire the idea of creating a student-led platform for peers to engage and achieve their goals, and I am more than willing to contribute. In Grade 9, I received awards for best academic achievement in Chinese and English and was among the top GPA achievers in my last school. Last July, I attended a summer program at Northwestern University focused on bioethical decision-making. Currently, I participate in a Young Entrepreneurs program, teaching domestic helpers in Hong Kong to learn Chinese, helping to improve their employment prospects. Also, for my IB MYP personal project, I created an interactive episode book featuring original fanfictions, with a targeted audience aged 5-12, aiming to improve children’s social competence through their interaction with the book. I’m also a member of U20 varsity volleyball team~

Rayden Lim
I’m Rayden, a year 10 student at BIS, and am one of the club leaders alongside Julia and Khanh. I joined THSJ as I truly believed that the goals and mission of THSJ are essential to helping the development and nurturing of a student’s love for academic writing, and that is something that I believe would be incredibly beneficial. I have had sufficient experience leading and organising club and events within my school, such as leading a Medical Club and MUN. Apart from that, I have also had notable academic achievements, such as being selected by my school as a finalist in the FOBISIA creative writing contest. This expertise, along with that of my peers Khanh and Julia, would make THSJ at BIS an inclusive environment for learning and writing.

Hoang Khanh Tran
Hello! My name is Khanh, and I am currently a freshman at the British International School. I have been a part of THSJ for a couple of months, driven by my passion for writing, especially on socio-economic and geopolitical topics. This interest has fostered my long-term commitment to clubs that focus on these issues, such as MUN. In addition. I am actively involved in environmental initiatives at my school, including CleanupD2 and Club Cure, which aim to promote sustainability and raise awareness about ecological challenges. I also enjoy practicing karate at a local club, where I have earned three black belts from three of the largest organizations in Vietnam. Currently, I serve as an assistant coach and help run classes, while also taking kickboxing and pilates to further enhance my skills. Beyond my athletic endeavors, I take great pride in supporting younger students and children. I am part of the organizational team for an art gallery that showcases and sells artwork created by child patients with cancer. Through this initiative, we were able to raise awareness to over 40 customers and funds that directly went to these students and their families.

Linh Nguyen
My name is Linh, and I'm a branch leader for THSJ at RGSV. I've always had a great passion for writing, and I've co-authored multiple research papers in the fields of biology, physics, mathematics, and history. Getting my papers published had always been a dream that I thought was too grand. Which is why, when I was invited to be a branch leader for the journal after attending an MUN conference at UNIS, I was overjoyed to be given the opportunity. Through my years of tutoring IGCSE students, teaching English, French, and German, many students have asked me to read their papers. To me, THSJ is the perfect gateway into the academic world, not only as a platform for student ingenuity, but also as a great motivator for many students to start their journey.
